Tomato Harvest 2017

Whiteflies on a yellow squash leaf that moved to the tomato plants
The 2017 tomato season was a good one. It's about time. In the past few years, our plants were hit with either early blight, tomato spotted wilt virus, spider mites or psyllids. One year I think we had all four ailments!

This summer started out being a challenge with extreme heat in July and August which caused some blossom drop. The plants caught up and started fruiting well in mid-August. One plant was pulled a few weeks ago due to a heavy infestation of whiteflies, that also plagued the nearby yellow squash plant. The four remaining tomato plants ended up being good producers and very tasty.

'Sweet Chelsea' and 'Marmande'
'Green Zebra' - will spread out the tomatoes so they ripen better

Here's a video I did before the weather cool down.

  1. Hi Betty, I enjoyed your video and your descriptions of the tomatoes you are growing.

Can you tell us what size smartpot you have the Green Zebra growing in ?

  2. Hi Jim - I like to use the #20 Smart Pot which holds 20 gallons. Even taller indeterminate tomatoes grow well in this size. I also use a concrete reinforced mesh wire cage over it. Because Smart Pot fabric is breathable, air to the roots make them grow larger so the plants are happy and very healthy. Plus plants don't get SO hot like they do when growing in other containers. They are pretty impossible to over water which makes them great for new gardeners or children who love to help water the plants! Many Denver area retailers stock them in different sizes. They aren't expensive and last several years. Thanks for asking! Have a great fall season!
