In the current climate of shelter in place and maintain distance from others to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it is not possible to take a garden class in person along the Front Range of Colorado.
Over the years I've taught several garden classes on many topics. A popular one is beginning vegetable gardening. What better timing than to share this with you right before the beginning of another busy outdoor garden season. Please feel free to forward to others.
My only goal is to be a credible resource among all the gardening websites out there today. This should be applicable for Zone 5 gardeners in the Rocky Mountain Region.
My very best to you as we get through these difficult times together.
Betty thank you for all your wonderful posts-so positive and great information! A wiggle and a scratch from my Wheaten Sandy to Forest!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Much appreciated. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteBetty, You are a treasure for we Front Range gardeners. It's so generous of you to share your detailed and comprehensive gardening guide.
ReplyDeleteI've become a big fan of cloth pots, as you know. A question I have is about whether it's a bad idea to reuse potting soil in either cloth pots or more traditional plastic or clay pots from year to year. I plant a few tomatoes and peppers in large pots and have traditionally used outdoor potting soil. But, for the number of pots I have, it takes several bags of new soil to refill them in the Spring. Is it okay to reuse soil for a season or more? Thanks...Jim
Jim - thank you so much for your nice words. And thanks for mentioning soil in containers, I'll add a slide to this PP about re-use and try to clarify. I completely understand that people hope to re-use potting soil because it's a pain to dispose of (esp. for apartment folks) and it seems like such a waste and cost involved. That being said, there's no landscape police that will come to our homes and say that container soil can't be re-used! I still caution doing this practice IF there was disease or pest insect issues from the previous season. If not, then I personally don't see a problem in re-using the soil. You can also re-use vegetable soil by moving it to ornamental containers this season. I use spent potting soil to fill low spots in our lawn or I'll spread it around the fence line, then cover it back with the shredded bark. Some goes into our compost pile. It's such a pain to dispose of when you have large amounts. Here's a credible article on this very topic - https://dengarden.com/gardening/You-CAN-Recycle-Potting-Soil Hope this helps! Have a wonderful outdoor gardening season ~ Betty
