Month to Month Planting Guide in Colorado

  1. I love your garden tips and guidance! Question...Do you trim your iris plants back in the fall? I usually do, but this year I only had two iris blooms. Thanks!

  2. Hi Unknown - thank you for commenting, much appreciated! I do not trim back iris in the fall, they can use their foliage to generate energy for next year's blooms. The exception might be if they were diseased. About the only time they are trimmed is when they are divided which is recommended in late July through
    August or so. Lack of blooms could be too much shade, planted too deeply or they have become too crowded. This quick article from Penn State is helpful, applies to us in CO just fine. https://extension.psu.edu/dividing-irises
